Three off the Tee - BHGC Newsletter

8 April 2024

Hello there

If we have a hosepipe ban this year, I will cry! One of our members, Peter Bowen, has been recording rainfall each month over the past few years and the figures for the last five months make scary reading.

But it is Augusta time and if we can't experience the joy of the fairways, at least we can watch the professionals slicing, shanking and trying to get out of those trees! No guesses who I will once again be cheering for 😊 (my patience levels obviously seem to ignore Rory not winning this). This year, I am hoping Tiger has a beautiful game too.

Hopefully better weather will grace us soon and your photos will start coming in again. We have missed so many Spring photo opportunities.

A slightly different newsletter layout this week. A trial and if I do continue to use it, the colour will change to Brocton green 😊.

Par for the Course

According to the R&A, parkland courses with clay based soils have been particularly vulnerable even where there is drainage. The volume of rain has commonly overwhelmed the natural drainage potential of soils and drainage systems, especially aging designs which have had additional connections tapping into existing drains that were never designed to calculate maximum flow rates.

The Greenkeeping team have been tidying up after the storm and top dressing tees, but the fairways are simply too wet to get the machines on to cut. The rain is frustrating everyone!

And the Tuesday Social is back! We had 61 golfers take part last week, with the winner, John Hall earning himself a whopping £16 and the parking spot

Clubhouse

I have created a new page on our website (for both members and non members), with all the upcoming events at Brocton Hall. Home/Information/Social Calendar & Events

In April we have the popular Jazz Night (with optional pre show Fish & Chips), the Lady Captain's Charity Lunch and a new weekly BNI (Business Network International). The 'Drinks with the Captain' and New member 9 hole social on the 26th April are being rescheduled - I will update everyone once a new date has been finalised.

May is Quiz time and a free Pitch, Putt and Prosecco event if you know of any ladies keen to give golf a try.

Member, Aaron Stubbs is offering physiotherapy sessions here in the Clubhouse. Look online or in the clubhouse for more information.

Members Question

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

Q. I enjoy reading Three Off The Tee, but as a member I also like to be kept informed of the wider issues that the Club and Management Committee contend with and manage on behalf of the members.

Last year I found the Chairmans Blog to be of real interest and helpful in giving me, as a member, an insight into the wider issues of the Club. May I ask what has happened to the Chairman's Blog? Has it been decided to stop producing it?

If it has then I would ask that you please reconsider, as I and my playing partners found it helpful and informative, and it would be a shame to lose it as a way of communicating with members.

A. The Chairman will be sending one out shortly.

Hole in one

Some nicknames heard around golf courses for those bad shots -

  • Colonel Gadddafi - Dangerous in sand
  • Diego Maradona - Nasty little five footer
  • Mick Jagger - A big lip out
  • Pharoah - Buried in the sand
  • Red October - In the water, can't find it
  • Ryanair - Flew OK, but landed miles away
  • Son-in-law - Not all you hoped for, but it'll have to do

Happy golfing everyone,

Karen
