BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB

THREE OFF THE TEE 29 AUGUST '23 NEWSLETTER

Hello there

A little later this week. I hope you all enjoyed a peaceful long weekend.

Viktor Hovland came through a final-round tussle with Xander Schauffele to secure FedExCup glory and an $18million payday with an impressive win at the Tour Championship. The story goes that at the last Ryder Cup, Padraig Harrington asked each of his players to write down who they would like to play with. The Irishman was stunned when they all came back with the same name – Viktor Hovland.

After the Norwegian’s emphatic success in winning the Tour Championship on Sunday night, Luke Donald must expect an even bigger stampede to partner up with Hovland in next month’s biennial contest in Rome. There has been a major improvement in his game ''Well, to sum it up, throughout the year, I feel like my short game has improved massively; course management has been a big deal, too. I'm not short-siding myself as much as I used to, and just handling adversity a lot better because I believe in my game, and if I hit one bad shot or make one mistake, it's not the end of the world. I kept pressing on, making birdies, and suddenly we're back in it again." Lesson to be learnt!

With 234 members taking part in last week's Bar Levy Survey, it certainly proved to be an interesting debate. Results are under 'Notices'

The August Lottery will be drawn tomorrow afternoon in the Vardon Lounge.

The last Girls Golf Rocks sessions took place on Saturday. It has been a great summer for the 11 girls who took part. The girls went out on the course last week and played a few holes and on Saturday they did chipping and bunker practice . The sessions ended with a presentation, with each girl receiving a certificate to say they had participated in the programme for 2023. Thanks must go to our GGR coach Adam and our Ambassadors Hannah and Maria-Tiffany. Well done everyone!

We didn't have many photos this month, but these four that we did receive, more than made up for it. Pure quality! Ian Gwinnell, Jenny Bloor and Nigel Lunn all managed to capture the resident heron, with Peter Bowen getting close to some deer in front of the clubhouse. The winner of the Member Photo of the Month this month is Ian. Thank you to all of you. Please keep them coming.

PAR FOR THE COURSE

Next week is course maintenance week so a reminder to please pick up your ball if the Greenkeeping staff are on the greens. It is essential that routine maintenance is carried out on all surfaces, to present them at their best, as well as improving their health. They will keep disruption to a minimum, but it will greatly aid their tasks if you allow them the space to carry out the work as quickly as possible. The quicker they can do this vital work, the quicker you will be back playing on the greens.

MEMBERS QUESTION

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

NOTICES

234 members took part in the Bar Levy survey!  Arguments from both sides from, ''it is only a pot of tea a week, so support your club'' to simply adding too much financial pressure.

Do you feel that an annual Bar levy of £100 should be reintroduced on the membership card for all members?

  • Yes 149 (63.7%)
  • No   85 (36.3%)

And some of the comments:

  • Too many members never come in the bar or spend any money at the club. At least this would ensure £100 is spent
  • Whilst I spend well over £100 a year its my choice I am not being forced to spend
  • The golf club should be there for members to use how they see preferable. They’ve paid their dues for that privilege. The fact is that it will never be a bustling hub due to location and the need to drive to/from. To expect an additional £100 up front is an absolute cheek, and that’s coming from somebody who easily would spend that figure.
  • I think it's a good idea. Clubhouse is fairly quiet which is a shame and there is a lot of "carpark golf"
  • I spend far more than £100 in any event. Don’t think we should make things more difficult financially for members on tight budgets.
  • It does not make sense to reintroduce a bar levy as the people who use the bar will continue to do so anyway (myself included), the people who do not use the bar would only use it until the levy runs out, so charging the members who use the bar and catering services an extra £100 at subscription renewal is just an expense that isn’t really justified nor fair.
  • It is a good way of meeting other members in a great club house
  • Previous clubs I have been a member of all had a bar levy. If this means that the bar is supported and then able to offer the best possible service to the members then all the better.
  • Our members need to be able to make their own decision as where they would wish to eat and drink. Prices at the Club are not competitive with other local eating/drinking establishments, especially when one considers that we already pay a not insignificant sum to be a member. So, if one added, say, £100 to the Subscription Invoice, this would be detrimental.

All of us at Brocton Hall wish our many members with a birthday this week a very Happy Birthday!  Happy Birthday to Ceri Evans, Wayne Cooper, Clive Griffiths, Gillian Owen, Jason Murphy, Mary Richards and Mark Newman.  Many, many happy returns to you on your special day. May you have a wonderful day full of family, friends, and celebration.
