BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB

THREE OFF THE TEE 4 SEPTEMBER '23 NEWSLETTER

Hello there

If you were anywhere near the office this afternoon you would have heard a whoop of delight! 🙂 Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Shame Lowry have made the Ryder Cup team along with Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg. Luke Donald has chosen a great mix of experience and youth, though many will be disappointed that Adrian Moronk didn't get his debut. Bring it on!

Mark Wheatley sent in proof that our Pro Nev, is always serious about his golf! 🙂 Here is is trying to hole a putt at The Ducks, Aberlady. Thank goodness he wasn't wearing a kilt! On the other end of the scale, with something more scary (than Nev in a kilt?), Neil Johnson came across this slithery fellow. I hope he doesn't mistake a golf ball for a duck egg. Not sure what the rule would be for that one.

PAR FOR THE COURSE

Peak season may be drawing to an end, but preparation is the key to future success. Now is the time to prepare the fairways and greens for next year. During autumn we usually tend to get favourable conditions for working on getting the grass to grow and germinating seed. This week's course maintenance is really crucial for not only repairing any damage that’s been caused during the growing season, but also preparing the golf course so it is ready for the winter. Please be patient out there and let the Greens Team do what they need to do.

CLUBHOUSE

Our Gin of the week is Slingsby Blackberry Gin. It promises a refreshing taste of an initial floral hint of violet, followed by rich Yorkshire blackberry jam notes. The result is a bright, fruity and refreshing gin with a beautifully sweet finish and a well-rounded mouthfeel. That has got to get the taste buds going.

The Christmas Menu's will be available this week!

Over half the tickets for our tribute to 80's music have been booked! Join us we as travel back in time and dance the night away to your favourite classic hits. Leading the 80s crusade, 80s Knights perform nearly two hours worth of the best 80s hits - you have the choice of Chilli Con Carne, Chicken Curry or a Vegetarian dish (£22 each) or simply join for the music only (£10 each).

Book your tickets for 16th September - 80's Knights or at the bar. Dressing up is optional (but encouraged 🙂)

MEMBERS QUESTION

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

Q. As I struggle to play off the White tees, could you let me know why someone cannot play off the Yellow tees if playing in a medal Honour Board competition?

A. Immediate answer is that this is what has always been stated in the rules for most medal competitions, but a good question and we will look into this.

HOLE IN ONE

With the Ryder Cup    inching towards us, I thought I would look for some interesting facts (I may have shared these last year but my memory doesn't stretch back that far 🙂)

  • The trophy was modeled to resemble British golfing great Abe Mitchell.
  • Between the years of 1935 and 1985, Europe only won the Ryder Cup once.
  • Sir Nick Faldo holds the record for most match wins with 23 victories.
  • There have only been six holes-in ones in the history of the Ryder Cup, just one of these was by an American.
  • The youngest player to play in the Ryder Cup was Sergio Garcia in 1999; he made his debut at the tender age of just 19. (Nicholai Hojgaard is 22 years old)

Happy golfing everyone,

Karen
