BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB

THREE OFF THE TEE 18 SEPTEMBER '23 NEWSLETTER

Hello there

Can Team Europe claim a third consecutive victory over Team USA in the Solheim Cup? Is Europe going to take the honours in the Ryder Cup? In their last event ahead of the Ryder Cup, BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth,  seven of Team Europe's players finished in the top 10. It's getting closer!

The neon was out, the bling required shades and the flares maybe didn't quite fit, but everyone who danced the night away at the 80'S Knights party on Saturday had a great time. Thank you to Justin and the Bar and Catering team for ensuring everyone had a perfect evening. Thank you to to the Social Committee for once again bringing the fun to Brocton.

Katie Mayo won the Division two nett prize in the Staffordshire County Wulfrana Bowl at South Staffs Golf Club yesterday! Congratulations Katie.

The 'Old Deers' team took part in the successful Katharine House Hospice Golf Day last Thursday, enjoying a lovely day in the drizzle. It was worth it as they won the prize for best ladies team! Well done Ladies!

COMPETITIONS

It was a little damp last Tuesday but 37 golfers put their waterproofs to the test in last weeks Tuesday Social. Maurice Braden was top dog with 24 points winning £15 and the car space.

Ladies

Congratulations to Diane Bell and Christine Graham! Winners of the Past Captains and Past Presidents competitions today. Well played everyone in very wet conditions! (very much the theme for the week)

Seniors

The Seniors Squad scored another resounding victory at home against Bridgnorth with a 5-3 result. Notably Julian Gibbon and Rob Mills beat the opposition 7 and 6. In fact most of the wins were clear victories before getting to the 18th. Well done gents! With only one loss at home this year, you are flying the Brocton flag high.

CLUBHOUSE

With the season changing and the weather unsure of what to do with itself, why don't you sit down to a comforting Sunday lunch, complete with all the trimmings. Choose from roast beef, loin of pork or leg of lamb, plus meat-free options and fish alternatives. Reservations are required. View the menu here (please let the chef know if you would like a meat free alternative)

From the Sacred craft distillery in Highgate comes our Gin of the Week, the Pink Grapefruit Gin, made using every bit of the grapefruit, from the flesh to the peel to even the pips! It may sound obvious, but by golly does this have some phenomenal pink grapefruit flavours. Sure to bring buzz to your day with a vibrant helping of zesty citrus.

MEMBERS QUESTION

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

NOTICES

There will be no 'Three off the Tee' for the next two weeks as I will be in South Africa visiting my son and grandson. I will be hoping there are no electricity blackouts for the Ryder Cup!

We have found one golf club and lost another. Nigel Lunn has found a men's golf club on the course last week and one of our Lady Members mislaid her TaylorMade putter. The putter has sentimental value so please let the office know if you have seen it.

All of us at Brocton Hall wish our many members with a birthday this week a very Happy Birthday!  Happy Birthday to Paul Austin, Gerald Bennet, Stephen Taylor, Carl Lea, Julian Gibbon, Henry Watkins, Alfie Martin, Steven Cotterell and Raymond Summers. May your day be filled with sunny skies and perfect drives.

HOLE IN ONE

On Saturday we headed up to Liverpool and enjoyed a great evening at The Cavern Club (highly recommended but not for those who are claustrophobic - both the tight spaces and sheer volume of people). Heading up the stairs on the way home, this familiar face was in the company of famous rock stars 🙂

Some interesting facts about the Wild Thing:

  • His first set of clubs were an adult set that he cut down. They were so long and heavy that on his backswing the club kept going past parallel - in short these clubs created Daly's famous swing.
  • He has recorded two country and western albums
  • In 1995 after winning the British Open, he put chocolate ice-cream in the Claret Jug
  • Daly supposedly hates flying. This explains why be bought his huge RV and drives to tournaments instead
  • When big John arrived in college, he was a bit too big for his golf coach at 235 pounds. So he embarked on an ambitious diet, limiting his daily intake to Jack Daniel’s and popcorn. Remarkably, it worked. In around two and half months, he lost nearly 70 pounds.

Happy golfing everyone,

Karen
