THREE OFF THE TEE 19 FEBRUARY '24 NEWSLETTER

Hello there

A mixed bag of emotions on the sporting front this weekend. Birmingham and Arsenal won, and Raheem Stirling was my hero for the day 🙂 (apologies to City fans). Charley Hull is on form, Hideki Matsuyama fired a stunning 62 to emerge from the chasing pack and clinch victory at the Genesis Invitational but alas, it was not a good weekend for Josh Bohannon and his team.

Well done to Junior Captain, David and Junior Vice Captain, Taryn driving 306 yards between them in very tough course conditions on Friday's Junior Captain's Drive In. Unfortunately the course was closed but Junior Organiser, Nicki Bowen organised some time at the Midlands Indoor Golf Centre for the Juniors and a fun day was had despite the weather.

PAR FOR THE COURSE

Bunkers should be a hazard for the ball, not the eye and members have enjoyed the benefits of the renovated bunkers that are back in play. You will be aware that the Greenkeepers are currently renovating bunkers on the 5th and 6th fairways. Bunkers are a key design feature on the golf course and these renovations will help the course for many years to come.

You will also notice that there has been some work on the trees by the 2nd tee, bringing in more light. A reminder to please drive down the middle of the fairway on the 2nd, and if your ball does go wayward towards any of the houses, this must be reported to the office.

COMPETITIONS

Too much rain, rain and more rain, meant many of the scheduled competitions were cancelled or postponed. The good news is that March is supposed to be the driest month of the year in Staffordshire.

The Men's 18 hole Winter Medal competition did go ahead on Saturday

  • 1st  Steven Treadwell with a nett 60
  • 2nd Mark Newman with a nett 62
  • 3rd Darrel Poole with a nett 63

CLUBHOUSE

Thank you to all the members who support the Tuesday kitchen closure - the more cobs are put out for sale, the more cobs are sold. Together with all the cobs sold in the Friday Special, it appears our members have a fondness for them!

There are some late afternoon tables available for Mothering Sunday. Treat the Mother, the Grandmother, the Aunt, the Carer in your life to a freshly cooked three course meal. We look forward to welcoming you on the 10th March. Click here for the menu. Please get in touch with Justin to reserve your table.

MEMBERS QUESTION

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

Q. After reading your ‘3 off the tee’ email inviting questions, I notice today that holes 5 & 6 are closed for bunker renovation. This question occurs. Why can’t at least some of the bunkers be finished before work on others are started? As of the weekend 18th February we have 7 holes (on the back 9) with all the bunkers GUR, and have been for months. It appears that this number will increase to 9 holes out of play. Are we shortly to have a golf course with 16 holes without bunkers?

A. Holes 5 and 6 have been chosen due to the ease of golfers having the ability to move from the 4th green to the 7th tee with relative ease. The Greenkeepers can work uninterrupted with these holes closed ensuring the bunkers are completed quicker than if they were to continuously stop work allowing golfers to play through.

The bunkers that are still GUR have had in most cases an amount of sand (some all) put in and they have been turfed. Due to these being done during the winter the turf has not yet taken so will require a while a longer to establish. Due to this, they will remain GUR for a little while longer.
