THREE OFF THE TEE 26 FEBRUARY '24 NEWSLETTER

Hello there

The winter of 2023 into 2024 has tested everyone associated with the golf industry in the UK. Whether it is golfers frustrated at being unable to play or greenkeepers unable to maintain their golf courses and forced to watch as heavy rainfall causes untold damage to their hard work, this winter has been one to forget. The winter of 2023 into 2024 has been marked by severe wet weather – in fact the downpours began in July and have rarely let up. Every County has reported increased rainfall levels.  BIGGA (British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association) and ourselves ask for patience. Eventually the weather will improve and the damage will be repaired by our expert greenkeepers who have the training and ability to overcome any challenge thrown at them. Andy and his team have the long-term health of the course at heart, so please support them where you’re able to and look forward to longer days, better weather and some good golf.

We have 199 members going into the three draws for £250 each to say thank you for paying their subscriptions early. I will be doing the draw tomorrow afternoon along with the Lottery draw. Good luck everyone!

We only have two 4pm and two 5pm reservation slots for Mothering Sunday on the 10th February. Please send Justin an email if you would like to treat somebody special - barandcatering@broctonhall.com.

IMPORTANT: AGMs are not only important from a governance perspective but also provide a platform for Members to share their views and ask questions. Year on year the numbers of those attending our AGM dwindles. This short survey is to see if Members would be more willing to attend on a weekday evening (6 till 8pm). Please take a couple of minutes of your time to answer this very short survey. Click here

Congratulations to Harri Painter for a great Hole in One on the 3rd on Saturday!

MEMBERS QUESTION

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

Q. After another deluge of rain last weekend and the course being closed on Sunday, quite rightly, the course was opened up on Monday and in the morning as normal an email asking us to take extra care around the course due to very wet conditions.

I witnessed a member getting his buggy stuck on the LHS of the 7th fairway in a place he should never have been, I was informed that the Greenstaff had to assist in pulling his buggy out! He wasn’t the only person out on a buggy, I saw at least another 6-8 on the course with blatant disregard to any signage and warnings.

That day I happened to do some research into local clubs status and found that some clubs had a carry only and winter wheels only rule, surely we need to follow suit with theses saturated conditions.

A. Thank you for your email. This issue will be discussed at the Management Committee meeting being held on Wednesday 28th February.

NOTICES

All of us at Brocton Hall wish our many members and staff with a birthday this week a very Happy Birthday!  Happy Birthday to Alan Blower, James Perry, PA Sandy, Ben Turner, Trish Franklin, Ethan Evans, Dave Moore, Keith Bradley, David Cowan, Steve Lucas, Hannah Golding, Craig Nesbitt, Mark Dolan and Roy Douglas. On your special day, may your golf game be as smooth as a well-oiled golf cart, and your swing as graceful as a swan with a golf club. Wishing you a fabulous day. Happy Birthday!

HOLE IN ONE

They say you drive for show and putt for dough. But the meaning of some strokes can’t be measured in money.

A reminder came late Friday when a little-known pro named Ronald Rugumayo drained a mid-range slider on the 18th hole of his second round at the Magical Kenya Open, at Muthaiga Country Club, in Nairobi. The 31 year old was sitting one outside the cut line coming up to the last hole. He had this putt to become the first player from Uganda to make a cut on the DP World Tour!

 Happy golfing everyone,

Karen
