BROCTON HALL GOLF CLUB

Three off the Tee - 8 April 2025 Newsletter

Hello there

A shorter newsletter this week, so only a quick cuppa and perhaps one biscuit.

The most important news is that your favourite cobs are now available at the bar every day. That is every single day! Please form an orderly queue 🙂

Thank you to all those members who have supported our Dovecote Renovation fundraising drive. The response has been heart warming and so far we have raised £1280.00. You can buy your brick through the What's On page. Please ensure you are logged in.

While the sun is shining at Brocton, the Masters field had their major preparation disrupted after thunderstorms saw most of Monday’s practice round cancelled at Augusta National.

In September, Hurricane Helene hit the south-eastern States - leaving death and destruction in its wake. Augusta, nicknamed 'The Garden City' because of its natural greenery, felt its mighty force. The residents are still dealing with the effects and I am sure we will see some changes on the course.

Once asked which golf course he would pick if he could only play one for the rest of his life, McIlroy picked Augusta. "There's the history, those sort of spring evenings where I would sit down with my dad and watch this tournament. I think all that sort of comes back to me, as well. Remembering why I fell in love with the game. I think it's obviously just a beautiful place. I don't think there's a more beautiful golf course on earth. It's like you're playing golf in the prettiest park in the world basically. I think just for that''.

Best of luck to Rory and the rest of the field. You know I will always be shouting for Rory though.

Competitions

Brocton had their first mixed match on Sunday, away at our new fixture, Walmley. They proposed a new fun format of a Betterball Stableford instead of a match which everyone loved and our Brocton winners were Lady Captain Jenny Bell & Jerry McKay.

Thank you to our winners and Mary Robertson, Neil Lehane, Jules Wells, Simon Wells, Julia Nichols, Tim Nichols, Steph Heath, Peter Heath, Katie Mayo, Marcus Smith, Coleen Painter, Ron Painter, Jenny Bulman, Chris Bulman, Steve Cotterell & Harriet Painter for representing Team Brocton

Sunday also saw the All Member Individual Multi Tee Stableford

  • 1st  Steven Trussler with 38 points
  • 2nd Sue Turner with 38 points
  • 3rd Peter Holford with 37 points

On Monday 7th April Brocton kept up their good form with another great win against Stone Golf Club. This time, not a total whitewash, but a convincing 7.5 to 0.5 win.

Martin Mayo won the nearest the pin prize on the seventeenth green. A great day was had by all, with Tony, the Stone Captain saying how much he enjoyed the food.

Members Question

You are invited to send any questions in that you would like one of the Management Committee members to answer. Often a committee member is approached on the putting green with a question that might not relate to their area of knowledge. This is a way for you to ask those questions.

Q. Can the Committee inform us when the next Members Forum will be held? We found the previous evenings very informative, both in answering specific questions as well as understanding what the Management Committee were focusing on for the year ahead and beyond?

A. The next Members Forum is in the works, with the Governance team set to meet soon to finalise the updated Rules and Articles of Association. Once these are ready, we will announce a date for the Forum to present these updates and share the Management Committee’s plans for 2025. We greatly appreciate your feedback on the previous forums and are pleased to hear they were informative. Once the date and agenda are confirmed, we will notify all members. Stay tuned for more details!

Hole in One

Did you know  that in the 1935 Masters, Gene Sarazen hit a double eagle on the 15th hole (the "shot heard 'round the world") to tie Craig Wood, forcing a 36-hole playoff which Sarazen won.

  • On the par-5 15th hole, Sarazen hit a 4-wood shot (235 yards) that went into the hole for a double eagle.
  • He was trailing Craig Wood by three shots at the time, and the double eagle allowed him to tie Wood and force a playoff.
  • Sarazen won the 36-hole playoff by five strokes, securing his Masters victory.
  • This shot is considered one of the most famous in Masters history and is referred to as "the shot heard 'round the world".
  • Sarazen was the first golfer to win all four major professional titles in the Masters era, and he competed at Augusta National until 1973.
  • To commemorate the double eagle, the Sarazen Bridge was built on the 15th hole in 1955.
  • Sarazen also won the U.S. Open twice (1922, 1932), the British Open once (1932), and the PGA Championship three times (1922, 1923, 1933).

Happy golfing everyone,

Karen
